Black Myth Wokong

One of the biggest successes against Journalists who did their best to burry it.
9/16/2024

Black Myth: Wukong is a game based on "Journey to the West". It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, attributed to Wu Cheng'en and published in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty.

The company Game Science and its developers came under attack by an IGN hit-piece in 2023,
"How Black Myth: Wukong Developer’s History of Sexism Is Complicating its Journey to the West"
Many other games Journalists and outlets cited these accusations and also wrote pieces to discredit the company.

Gamers, many who do not trust the games journalists, began looking into the accusations. Additional rumor's about an attempted extortion of Game Science to force inserting DEI. That they refused and in retaliation hit pieces where written. There has been no hard evidence of this claim.

A notable reaction in defense of "Black Myth: Wukong" against what gamers describe as "woke" criticism, where demands for diversity or inclusivity are seen as out of place or irrelevant in a game based on a specific cultural narrative like Journey to the West.

However accusations began to rise that the claims IGN made where based on mistranslated slang that was translated literally rather than intended meaning.
Eventually a female Chinese gamer Fei_fiii on YouTube Released the following video.

Over the years Journalists lost a lot of faith from the gaming community over inaccurate reviews, double standards and out right attacking the audience they write for. There are those who see Black Myth: Wokong as a victim of unfair cultural demand, others are indifferent to the controversy focusing solely on gameplay, and those who believe the controversy highlights real issues within the gaming industry and journalistic integrity. This mix of reactions underscores the ongoing rift within gaming culture about the intersection of game content, developer attitudes, Journalistic attacks and player expectations.

The results of the journalists attacking this game?
Nothing short of Glorious!

The game sold 10 million copies across all platforms within its first three days of launch on August 20, 2024 setting a new record for sales in a single day. By the end of two weeks, Black Myth: Wukong had sold an estimated 18 million units worldwide and today that estimate is 20 million becoming one of the fastest selling games of all time.
  • The game blew through Steam’s all-time record for concurrent players in a single player game.
  • On its launch day, "Black Myth: Wukong" became the most-watched game on Chinese streaming platforms, with over 29 million viewers.
  • The game contributed to a new record for Steam's all-time high of logged-in users, with over 37 million users simultaneously, which was attributed to the game's launch.

These records not only underscore the game's commercial success but the cultural impact is glairing. The writer for the IGN article was so angry with its success, that they literally asked people to pirate it rather than pay for it.

In China, it has spurred increased sales of PlayStation 5 units and has been used in promotional material for tourism due to its accurate depiction of Chinese landmarks and mythology.

The game's achievements are a testament to the growing need for developers to cater to players and not bend a knee to activists who never buy the games and make claims of the "Modern Audiance."
