Gamergate 2.0

"Gamergate 2" is a phrase the Journalists and game developers coined to describe gamers rejection to forced diversity in games. Particularly focusing on themes such as censorship of adult games, character gender and race swaps. Not for story but  for the fake perceived representation of “marginalized” people. One aspect of this renewed debate involves journalists and developers claiming harassment for receiving criticism.

GamerGate 2 was sparked by the actions of Sweet Baby Inc., a narrative development company, attacking and attempting to cancel Kabrutus for creating a curator page aimed at boycotting games associated with Sweet Baby Inc. This curator page, named "Sweet Baby Inc Detected," was perceived as a form of harassment by Sweet Baby Inc., leading to an attempt to mass-report the user, which many saw as an overreach and an attempt at censorship.

At its heart, GamerGate 2 revolves around the push for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in video games. Critics of Sweet Baby Inc. argue that the company's and other companies like it involvement in games leads to the inclusion of what they term "woke" agendas, focusing on diverse representation and social issues over traditional gaming elements.

Some journalists and developers have attacked and mass reported Youtubers and use a variety or colorful insults at the community they are meant to produce content for, same calling it a smaller more sadder version of gamergate.

Gamers critical of these developments argue for freedom from what they see as ideological imposition in gaming. They feel that games should primarily focus on entertainment and traditional gaming values rather than social or political messages.

There's a sentiment among some gamers that they are being attacked or marginalized by the gaming industry for not aligning with certain political or social views. This feeling is exacerbated by instances where gamers have been labeled as part of a problem for resisting these changes.

As a result of gamergate 2 reports indicate that over 17,000 game developers have lost their jobs in recent times, with figures from late 2023 into 2024 showing companies like Epic, EA, Unity, and others laying off thousands of employees. Game failures have cost Game developers 100’s of millions in losses

Games spectacular failures.

  • Concord by Firewall Studios was mentioned frequently for its disastrous launch, costing an estimated $100m-$200m but failing to break even with just over “25,000” copies sold. I don’t trust those numbers as the max player count maxed only 697 and the titles been taken off-line after only 12 days.
  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was criticized for its poor reception and sales performance, failing to capture the interest of players despite its unique premise.
  • Skull and Bones continued its trend of disappointing from previous years into 2024, with repetitive gameplay and a lack of innovation in the pirate game genre leading to its underperformance.
  • Dustborn and Foamstars were also cited for not capturing significant interest or sales, with Foamstars particularly noted for its failure to stand out in the crowded multiplayer arena shooter market.

  • Star Wars Outlaws while exact numbers are not known sales are expected to be much lower than initially anticipated. But with Ubisoft’s stock tanking while they still have another AAAA game for this years is not a good  sign.

  • *Update - Assassin's Creed Shadows delayed till Feb 2025
