Game Mod Sites
Non-Political

ModDB https://www.moddb.com/
ModDB is a platform dedicated to game modding, offering a space for the community to upload, access, and discuss mods for various games across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Here's an overview:

  • History and Purpose: Established in 2002 by Scott "INtense!" Reismanis, ModDB serves as a central hub for video game modifications, designed to foster community involvement in the creation and evolution of game mods.
  • Content and Community: Hosting over 12,500 mods and millions of downloads, the site emphasizes user-generated content such as mods, files, tutorials, and game-related information. Each mod has its own page for sharing screenshots, updates, and community interaction.
  • Philosophy: ModDB promotes strong community participation, often advancing active users to roles like moderators or administrators. While the platform supports a flexible content policy, it prohibits anything pornographic, defamatory, illegal, or that infringes on copyright.
  • Events and Recognition: ModDB hosts annual events such as the Mod of the Year competition (Golden Spanner awards) and maintains a Mod Hall of Fame, highlighting standout and innovative mods. These initiatives help define quality within the modding community.
  • Related Projects: Indie DB, a spin-off platform, focuses on indie games, mirroring ModDB's model but catering to independent developers and game-related news.
  • Community Engagement: On platforms like X, users frequently post about new mod releases, development updates, personal projects, and community events, especially during the summer, reflecting a highly engaged and seasonally active community.

BasedMods https://basedmods.eth.limo

BasedMods is a decentralized platform for modding video games, which emphasizes free speech and a minimal moderation policy. It hosts a variety of game modifications that users can upload and download, offering an alternative to more mainstream modding sites like NexusMods. The platform gained attention due to its stance on censorship and its embrace of blockchain technology, allowing for more robust backups and less vulnerability to takedowns. However, some users have reported technical issues with the site, possibly linked to the blockchain integration

DEG Mods https://degmods.com/

DEG Mods is a platform for liberating game mods, designed to offer unrestricted access to mods. It emphasizez user freedom by allowing mod uploads and downloads without limitations. DEG Mods is focused on providing a platform where modders can share their work without interference from corporate restrictions, ensuring that mods are accessible and preserved for all players. The site highlights freedom in modding and encourages community involvement.

DEG Mods is site aimed at providing a platform for game modding that emphasizes freedom from censorship and direct connection between mod creators and users.

DEG Mods positions itself as a liberating force in the game modding community, ensuring that mods are not censored, users do not get banned for mod usage, and there's no loss of historical data or community connection. It allows for the easy download of modpacks, although there's some criticism regarding monetization for faster downloads.

DEG Mods has used Geyser, a bitcoin crowdfunding platform, indicating they utilize innovative funding methods to support their operations or projects within the platform. There's mixed feedback as some users have criticized DEG Mods for their monetization strategy, suggesting it's less user-friendly for those who do not pay. However, there's also mention of community-driven efforts and projects associated with the brand, indicating active community engagement or related projects like DeGods, which seems to be a different but perhaps contextually relevant entity involving community building in different digital spaces.

Personally I don't mind supporting platforms that provide value.
